About Ichamama Factory

Ichamama Factory is situated between two rivers: Rwarai and Chinga River that both originate from The Aberdare Ranges. This pulping station was set up in 1964 and is located in Karuthi Sub-location 1847m above sea level, along the Nyeri-Nairobi Road. The factory processes coffee from 900 farmers, of which over 27% (250+) are women.

Processing & Drying

The coffee at Ichamama is wet processed, where the fully ripe cherries are pulped, fermented, and washed. The coffee is sun dried on raised beds slowly over 2- 3 weeks where the moisture content is reduced to 10-12%. Upon drying the coffee is then milled and graded at a separate dry mill by the workers who flawlessly sort the bright white parchment by density.

About the Othaya Cooperative

Kenyan coffee is managed by a cooperative production structure in which members vote on representation, marketing, and milling contracts, as well as profit allocation.  Ichamama Factory is part of one of the largest coffee cooperatives in Kenya, called the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society. With 19 separate factories and around 14,000 farmer members across the southern Nyeri area, the cooperative plays a central part in fair profit allocation for farmers, where they split the revenue 80-20 in favour of the farmers, with the remaining 20% going to the running of the cooperative.

About Grading

Kenya uses a unique grading name system for its coffee that is linked to the bean size and quality. The most popular grades for export are AA, AB and PB (Peaberry). AB grade is a combination of A (screen size 16 or 6.80mm) and B (screen size 15 or 6.20mm)

About the Region

Nyeri County

Nyeri is located at the heart of Kenya’s central province, on the foothills of Mt. Kenya, Africa’s second highest peak. Coffee grown here benefits from the mineral rich, red volcanic soils that many feel produce some of the greatest coffees in Kenya, if not the world. Nyeri is probably the best-known of the central counties, where the small holder farms are situated in climate friendly, cool high.
